Under a collaborative ‘lead customer programme’ (LCP), the companies will partner together to inform on-going development of Spine’s powerful data-driven Decision Engine, to be used by Constantine across its entire battery portfolio, tackling an increasing range of high-value use cases.
London, UK - 21st July 2026
As the world transitions to renewables, energy storage becomes a critical enabler for managing the electricity grid. Batteries are rapidly becoming the fastest growing energy asset class worldwide but are far more complex than solar or wind. Successfully managing grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to deliver attractive risk-adjusted returns now requires the use of sophisticated software fed by many different data streams.
An emerging powerhouse in the UK, Constantine Energy Storage Services (“Constantine”) has selected Spine Energy Technology (“Spine”) to provide its powerful data-driven decision automation software platform to help transform asset management operations across Constantine’s 3GWh BESS portfolio.
The lead customer programme (LCP) underway between the companies is more than simply a contract for Spine to provide asset management software to Constantine. As part of the wider collaboration, Constantine users are providing regular feedback on Spine’s software iterations and early-release platform capabilities drawing on first-hand experience operating their batteries in the market, while Spine’s technical experts bring thought leadership regarding how best to harness the technology’s potential for advanced BESS asset management applications.
A core element of Spine’s digital backbone is the Strategy Studio - a powerful software toolchain that enables users to encode and refine their own proprietary asset management strategies, automatically executed by Spine’s Decision Engine. Using this advanced technology enables customers to create valuable IP and help establish a leadership position in the market.
Mike Ryan (Constantine Commercial Director) said: “Spine is helping us transform the way we do asset management - harnessing the power of our data for decision making, risk management, and operational execution. Our collaboration with Spine lets us access the powerful technology they are building at really attractive commercial rates and we get to work closely with their fantastic team.”
Peter Bance (Spine CEO) said: “Having a highly engaged customer like Constantine dramatically accelerates the feedback loop in our product development and deployment. I am really excited about our partnership with Mike and the team – they have a wealth of hands-on experience operating these complex battery assets and it helps ensure the product we’re building at Spine will create lots of tangible value for our customers in the real world.”
Spine and Constantine have already identified a number of high value use-cases that can be addressed by Spine’s technology to deliver ‘quick win’ enhancements to day-to-day asset management - e.g. using Spine’s Data Product Library to consolidate Constantine’s extended data landscape into a single point of truth, to improve data access efficiency and interoperability.
Throughout the LCP, Constantine’s collaboration with Spine will unlock many more use-cases, directly adding value across the asset portfolio by maximising delivered revenue, managing key risks, and minimising asset unavailability. Using Spine will also help Constantine significantly reduce their ongoing costs by automating labour-intensive tasks, both internally and with contracted vendors, releasing valuable bandwidth for the asset management team and enabling more of the high-value decision-making to be brought in-house.
Ultimately, Spine is helping Constantine improve the ROI from the capital being invested in their growing battery portfolio and supporting a fundamental shift operationally, from reactive firefighting to proactive data-driven decision making. This technology-enabled approach of putting asset managers in the driver’s seat is set to become the new standard for the renewables industry.

Market Context
The rapid build-out of renewable electricity infrastructure assets is transforming energy systems worldwide, with over $2Tr/yr being invested.
Renewables are on track to displace fossil fuels as the dominant power generation source globally, but the inherent weather-related variability requires much more energy flexibility and dynamic control to balance the system in real-time.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are crucial for soaking up excess energy when it’s abundant and then discharging it at peak times when the grid under most strain.
The dramatic cost-reductions of mass manufacturing batteries has enabled them to become the fastest growing asset class in the energy sector.
About Constantine Energy Storage Services (“Constantine”)
Founded in 2021, Constantine Energy Storage Services is one of the UK’s leading battery energy storage system (BESS) asset managers and forms part of Constantine Group (founded in 1885), which also includes a portfolio of companies across property, project development, and wind power.
Constantine recently landed a £180m financing deal with a multinational banking consortium to help roll out a UK portfolio of 9 grid-scale battery assets, totalling 612MW / 1652MWh of capacity.
These 3 hour duration battery systems are designed to be able to simultaneously offer grid services to the system operators and monetise increasingly valuable volatility in wholesale trading markets, as more renewables are deployed onto the network.
Constantine manages assets on behalf of Constantine Group and 2 large equity investors: Canadian-based Alberta Investment Management Corporation, (“AIMCo”); and Railpen – the UK-based investment manager responsible for managing over £37 billion AUM on behalf of several pension schemes.
About Spine Energy Technology (“Spine”)
Founded in 2025, Spine is a B2B software company with its technology centre based in Cambridge (UK), one of the world’s leading innovation and venturing ecosystems.
Spine’s cloud-hosted software platform is multi-tenanted and highly secure, offering individual customers a private data platform and capabilities to support the development of their own proprietary strategies, automated via Spine’s powerful Decision Engine.
With Spine, customers can configure their own guardrails for defining the operating envelope of assets and associated vendor actions, benefiting from the platform’s built-in audit trail that automatically captures a record of decisions made, actions taken, and results delivered.
Spine is backed by ultra-high net worth individuals with backgrounds in asset management and algorithmic trading.
Building on an initial round of pre-seed funding in May 2025 which included early-stage investor Zinc VC, Spine is establishing its product with industry-leading customers in the UK, ahead of international expansion.
